What is Gzip Compression?

Posted by design 01/15/2016 0 Comment(s) Website Performance Guides,

In short, gZip compression is a technology that allows your web server to load faster by way of compressing files on-the-fly, so to speak.

How do I Know if gZip Compression is Enabled?

There's a quick and easy tool to check if you have this feature enabled.  Visit the gZip Compression Test site.  Enter your URL and click Go.  You'll know within moments if gZip is working on your site.

What if it's not working?

You can often enable compression through the admin area of the software you're using. The majority of Earth Girl Hosting clients use Open Cart.

To enable compression in Open Cart, login to your admin area:

  • Select the Settings menu

  • Select the Server tab

  • Set Output Compression Level (we recommend between 4 and 6)

Enable gZip Compression via .htaccess

We recommend being very careful doing this. Clients are welcome to ask our tech support staff  to do this for you.  One character out of place in this file and your site could go down. Add the following code to the end of your .htaccess file:

<IfModule mod_deflate.c>
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript application/javascript text/javascript text/css text/html text/xml

If you have any trouble with gZip compression on your Earth Girl hosted site, contact us via the support desk. We are happy to help.
